The City of Herington has replaced the rubber mulch under the play structure in Father Padilla Park. A major portion of funding for this project was made possible through a grant from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment. According to ISRI, Voice of the Recycling Industry, there are multiple benefits of using recycled tires. Repurposing of tires helps from filling up landfills, creeks, and ponds. Through creative thinking new products have been made or old ones redesigned. Recycling tires also helps in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Using four used tires can reduce CO2 by 323 pounds. This new mulch also adds a soft-landing area for kids to jump and play. The Herington city staff hopes this project will enhance the use of the park for years to come.
